Relation between country and town

The project seeks to establish interdisciplinary indicators that can shed light on the development of the relation between rural and urban areas since the municipal reform. To do so, the project will develop a town-country register and index, and based on identified tendencies, the project will in 2023 launch a series of qualitative analyses of the major development tendencies in the country-town relation.

The project is a collaboration between Queen Mary’s Centre and Statistics Denmark. The project will i.a. create a register consisting of one or more datasets of variables relevant to the country-town relation. This may include data on i.a. demography, housing, education, labour market, transport, environment etc. The register will be based on existing data sources and a further development in select data areas. Based on the register, the project will develop an index with a series of indicators describing the development of the relation between country and town.

An interdisciplinary expert group comprised of researchers and representatives of public authorities, the business community and interest groups has been appointed to advise and quality assure the creation of data and indicators.

Through the project, the Crown Princess Mary Center and Statistics Denmark wish to contribute new insights to the public debate on country and town and make available knowledge resources that may be used actively by the many stakeholders working on various aspects of the country-town relation. According to plan, the country-town index and register will be launched before December 2023. The project is funded by the philanthropic association Realdania.
