What is your area of research?
I research the design of energy markets and how the integration of renewable energy affects market dynamics and prices. My work focuses on the drivers of electricity prices, the cross-border effects of energy policy and the impact of these policies on both energy suppliers and consumers. In addition, I study the profitability of energy storage and other flexible technologies, as well as capacity markets, electricity spot markets, and related topics.
Why is it so important?
Energy market design and policy determine which technologies will be invested in and how fast the energy transition can take place. They also have a huge impact on energy consumers and can lead to peak prices and distributional challenges for different consumer groups. Hence, we need energy market designs and policies that are effective while also reducing burdens on households, companies, and citizens.
A project you are proud of?
I have several publications on energy markets that address the challenges the energy transition has on energy markets and prices while also delivering relevant solutions. Recently, I am leading the PtXMarkets project funded by Innovation Fund Denmark. It analyses the short and long-term market and policy requirements for green fuels. It has already delivered important results, such as the first hydrogen demand curve based on sectoral analysis. Finally, together with my PhD students, I have recently published a Nature Communications paper that shows the optimal allocation of green hydrogen production throughout Europe.
