Exploration Labs
An exploration lab is an in-depth and creative programme in which university researchers and external partners collaborate to develop in-depth knowledge on complex problems and identify possible pathways for addressing them. We begin by defining the problem and then work through interdisciplinary collaboration to explore different perspectives on it. Along the way, we present the key insights that emerge and conclude by planning the next steps for future action.
The lab is meant to allow for an exploration of the most complex types of societal challenges — challenges that involve multiple sectors and involve many different actors. Such problems are often characterised by uncertainty not only about the solutions, but also about the very scope and nature of the problem itself. The lab is primarily aimed at foundations or large organisations that are stakeholders in a large and complex problem that they want to work with strategically and long-term, and where there is no requirement to quickly reach conclusions and solutions.
Read about a past lab: Impact Lab 2.0
Impact Lab 2.0 brought together researchers from the humanities and social sciences with professionals from within the environmental and social sectors. The goal was to generate new solutions within the theme of “democratic sustainability,” or the ability of democratic institutions to respond to the environmental crisis in a way that incorporates public priorities and implements lasting, community-supported change.
Approximately 15 participants joined the lab, which took place over the course of a year. Participants took turns hosting the sessions. Sessions took place at city halls across the country, as well as at a museum, an innovation and co-working space, a church, and at the University of Copenhagen. The rotating hosting format offered a unique opportunity to gain insight into each other’s organisations. The agenda included a group lunch, a guided tour of the host organisation, presentations, discussions and group work.
The lab developed multiple outputs, including a special edition on democratic sustainability in the Danish Journal Økonomi og Politik (Economics & Policy), several academic articles, an exhibit and a podcast. The lab also served as an incubator for project development and continues to refine project ideas that are seeking further funding.
