What do you research?

My work focuses on changes in the news media, on political communication, and the role of digital technologies in both. I have done extensive research on journalism, American politics, and various forms of activism, and a significant amount of comparative work in Western Europe and beyond. I have written about journalism, digital media, the business of news, political communication, misinformation and related topics in dozens of scholarly articles, edited volumes, and books, including Ground Wars (winner of the American Political Science Association’s Doris Graber Award for the best book on political communication published in the last ten years), The Power of Platforms (with Sarah Anne Ganter), and Avoiding the News (with Benjamin Toff and Ruthie Palmer). In addition, I have been a co-author of the annual Reuters Institute Digital News Report since 2015.

Work you are proud of?

As a frequent speaker at academic, industry, and policy-making conferences, I have provided expert advice to both governments and news media companies in several countries. I served on the European Commission High Level Expert Group on Fake News and Online Disinformation, chaired the Forum on Information & Democracy working group on the sustainability of journalism, and chair an expert committee appointed by the Danish government to review media subsidies. My work has been covered by a wide variety of media all over the world, and I have written for the Financial Times, El Pais, the Hindu, the Indian Express, Zeit Online, the Washington Post, and many other publications.
